Nineteen years of experience in Life Sciences Industry with Roche Diagnostics, formerly Boehringer Mannheim (1986 -2005)

Vice President Special Projects, Indianapolis  2003 – 2005

  • Directed all activities to develop in/out licensing technologies including business plan creation, research of the market, active marketing, deal negotiation, closure and post-deal support to create funding.

  • Supported a start-up company (Theron, Inc.) through the marketing and out licensing of an electrochemical sensor technology with immunoassay applications.

  • Created a new sales channel for Roche's Applied Science Business Unit by developing “on demand” assays for pharmaceutical companies and Clinical Research Organizations.

  • Led a Roche Diagnostics-wide project to increase the robustness of all quality processes involving all four business areas (Diabetes Care, Centralized Diagnostics, Applied Sciences, Molecular Diagnostics), all North American and European R&D and Operations sites, and all steps of the commercialization pipeline (from research through development, production to launch and post launch service and support).

  • Led Roche Diagnostics’ business, economic development and relationship building efforts towards Indiana’s emerging Life Sciences community.

Vice President R&D and Business Development  -  MyDoc.com 2001– 2003

  • Led with cofounders a team to build a cutting edge internet-based medical business financed by Roche Diagnostics; researched, identified and integrated medical intelligence (brain) of service.

  • Created new business’ Quality System and designed its HIPAA compliance.

  • Divested MyDoc.com to United Healthcare as a result of a change in corporate strategic direction.

  • Acted as Change Leader for IT. Created turnaround from demotivated organization under attack to a business- and goal-oriented, respected unit.

Vice President Patient Care R&D  1996 – 2001

  • Managed budget of approx. $25MM, upwards of 200 employees, and the R&D efforts for all diabetes care and coagulation systems, including reagents/assays, devices, and software.

  • Directed launch of 12 different products including Accu-Chek Advantage platform/upgrade products, the world's leading diabetes monitoring system, with sales of approx. $1B.

  • In support of those product launches, established structured development processes early on resulting in more robust and predictable R&D performance and product quality.

  • Served as Change Leader in R&D during merger between Boehringer Mannheim and Roche Diagnostics: reduction and redeployment of 100 employees, retention of key personnel during change, shutdown of two development programs, and successful delivery of all other projects.
